Some argue against infant baptism on the grounds that the children do not understand at the time what is happening. (This is true. Neither did Abraham's son Isaac understand what was happening when he was circumcised being eight days old.) But this, if anything, makes baptism more wonderful and sure in meaning. For it is a seal, not of man's ability, but of God's power and faithfulness.
- C.I. Williamson, The Westminster Shorter Catechism

And great is His faithfulness.

All that delights you in earthly things can never satisfy you for all of your desires are in God. The comforts you have here are only drops inflaming, not satisfying the appetites of your soul, but the Lamb will lead you to the fountains of living water.
- John Flavel (1628-1691)

Gift of Gifts

O Source of all Good,
What shall I render to thee for the gift of gifts,
thine own dear Son, begotten, not created,
my redeemer, proxy, surety, substitute,
his self-emptying incomprehensible,
his infinity of love beyond the heart's grasp.

Herein is wonder of wonders:
he came below to raise me above,
was born like me that I might become like Him.

Herein is love;
when I cannot rise to him he draws near on wings of grace,
to raise me to himself.

Herein is power;
when Deity and humanity were infinitely apart
he united them in indissoluble unity, the uncreate and the created.

Herein is wisdom;
when I was undone, with no will to return to him,
and no intellect to devise recovery,
he came, God-incarnate, to save me to the uttermost,
as man to die my death,
to shed satisfying blood on my behalf,
to work out a perfect righteousness for me.

O God, take me in spirit to the watchful shepherds, and
enlarge my mind;
let me hear good tidings of great joy,
and hearing, believe, rejoice, praise, adore,
my conscience bathed in an ocean of repose,
my eyes uplifted to a reconciled Father,
place me with ox, ass, camel, goat,
to look with them upon my redeemer's face,
and in him account myself delivered from sin;
let me with Simeon clasp the new-born Child to my heart,
embrace him with undying faith,
exulting that he is mine and I am his.

In him Thou hast given me so much that heaven can give no more.

of the Gospel story.
So thankful that is enough to bring joy to my heart tonight.

Ellis Island

Ellis Island by Russ Ramsey
One day I will take the boat to Ellis Island.
I will walk the pier and enter the station.
I will see the stacks of abandoned steamer trunks,
the rejection papers under glass,
the black and white photos of the mustachioed men
in their bowler hats, and the women with their parasols.
I will study their eyes,
looking for hints of their hope,
their fear, and their desperation.
I will try to imagine them standing on that same floor,
not browsing a museum,
but looking for a new world.
I will climb the Separation Stairs
and I will consider Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats.
I will think about what it means
to be a citizen of a Kingdom
I must leave everything to enter.
And then I will understand
that I, too, am an immigrant.

but how could we be in San Antonio and NOT take a photo of the Alamo?
we navigated the one-ways and waited on pedestrians and dodged police cars and trailed trolley buses and pulled over just long enough to get one shot.
(ignoring the tourists who might have thought we were snapping them, cropping out the trash can in the way...)

One short evening at Casa Hogar de San Francisco, an orphanage in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, MX.
This picture was taken during the mad chaotic frenzied scrambled to grab candy after the pinata first began to give up its candy stores...

I love this picture.
The color.
The action.
The faces.

I think I took this picture, but I didn't take many photos last night. The kids took most of them- aiming sometimes aimlessly at their friends.The entire album causes me to smile. Last night we were reminded of how the Greatest Gift of Christmas, Jesus himself, continues to gift us. And last night the truth of ministry revealed itself once again- we are blessed to be a blessing.
