Warning to the Bibliophile...

"Beware you be not swallowed up in books! An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge."
John Wesley (1703-91)

  1. I don't think John Wesley means that we can't enjoy our books or reading...just that we shouldn't lose ourselves so much in books or "being well-read" that we forget to be good to our fellow people :-)....

  2. Oh I agree! :-)
Go to 1Corinthians 13, the entire chapter, not just the part that we hear at weddings and such...
1Corinthians 13:2- and if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
I think that's exactly what Wesley was referring to.

  3. Another great quote, though, is from Thomas Jefferson written to John Adams in 1815,"I cannot live without books." Now, is that an arguable one?
